Shedding tears gets rid of so much emotional trash for most people, especially those who have no problem with grabbing a tissue and having letting their emotions go.
For people who don't cry, or for those who view crying as a weakness, they're the folks who tend to bottle up their feelings and emotions.
The backlash to that is, their energy is never released and manifests in other ways, emotionally or physically and, as a result, those very people tend to have problems later in life.
The healing effects of crying are obvious once the crying ends and your body goes from a high emotional state to relaxation and peace. After crying, your heart rate and breathing slow down and your body naturally relaxes.
To me, crying is a gift. It really is the soul's way of releasing and expressing.
By not allowing yourself to express your emotions, you're denying your heart, mind and body the opportunity to open and purge all the unwanted energy that you have bottled up.
If they're happy tears, then let them out and have a good cry.
Neuroscientist Dr. William H. Frey II, PhD, director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center studies the affects of crying. Research shows:
85 percent of women and 73 percent of men felt less sad and angry after crying
On average, women cry 47 times a year, men cry 7 times a year
Crying last 6 minutes - on average
Tears are more often shed between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Here are five reasons why crying is good for you:
Crying Relieves Stress
Because un-alleviated stress can increase our risk of heart attack and damage certain areas of our brain, the human ability to cry has survival value,
Crying Lowers Blood Pressure
Crying has been found to lower blood pressure pulse rate, and body immediately following therapy sessions during which they cried and raged.
Tears Remove Toxins
In addition, Frey says tears actually remove toxins from the body. Is that they may be removing, in their tears, chemicals that build up during emotional stress."
Crying Reduces "Manganese"
The simple act of crying also reduces the body's manganese level, a mineral which affects mood and is found in up to 30 times greater concentration in tears than in blood serum.
Emotional Crying Means You're Human
While the eyes of all mammals are moistened and soothed by tears, only human beings shed tears in response to emotional stress. Emotional expression acknowledges the feelings you're having. Emotions motivate us to empathize, coordinate and work as a unit to best survive.
So next time you feel those tears welling up or that lump in your throat, go ahead, have a good cry.
